Marketing Ideas for Small Business - These Are So Simple A Child Could Do It

By Tristram Lodge

Small businesses are going under by the dozen daily in this difficult economy, but there are lots of free or lower cost selling ideas for small business. Little shops may continue to fail as shops such as Walmart and Target continue to fight it out for market domination by offering ludicrously decent prices on everything from clothing to electronics to food. When small businesses become a victim of this unbeatable competition, folk lose their livelihoods and communities lose valuable resources.

Therefore how is a small business to stay floating in these difficult times?

If you have a bricks and mortar consultant store like a camera shop or a tool store chances are you are struggling to generate revenue by cutting margins and outgoings drastically. This country has to get back to offering worth in the shape of excellent post-sale and pre-sale shopper service, offer experience and employ folk who know what they're doing, not someone who has neither initiative, personality nor experience.

Those are 3 of the things these large box stores don't offer : uniqueness, expertise and consumer service. Personally I mostly try to go shopping at small local businesses, because they are the spine of a community and they are frequently more informed and useful than large stores, where you are fortunate if you can get any help at all!

Its remarkable how many small businesses don't consider it wise to have a domain. They almost certainly don't know that Google really loves small business and will always pull a small business to the top of a search page, by someone putting in the name of a town and whatever they are searching for. This is an enormous advantage to a business owner. There are always local directories, as an example thru the local Chamber of Commerce, where you can list your site, often for a small fee or free.

Many small business owners are also under the impression that starting and maintaining a domain will cost them a lot of money and is difficult. Offering inexpensive internet site construction and maintenance for small local businesses has become a cottage industry in itself.

Small local businesses must have a domain offering a brief description of what they offer, what they specialize in doing, a map to where they are located, opening hours and contact numbers and an email address, any successful use of income-producing Google Adwords and affiliate advertising on those sites, can become a very pleasant bonus. By offering an opt-in box, a small business web site owner can build a list, and then offer discounts and special offers to those customers by initiating a promotional campaign.

Net businesses have a much tougher task on their hands. They have much larger competition and must employ S.E.O and a lot of other selling tactics, particularly to make a list of customers. A website's acclaim reflects a number of things : the age of the site, the consistency with which it is updated, the value of its content and the relevancy of its content and the number of backlinks it has. Just like a small high st business, a website should offer useful info, great buyer service and brand itself as being unique. It's all about attraction promoting.
